The early-mid 19th century was a tumultous time for Scottish politics. The cessation of the Napoleonic Wars saw a working-class push in Scotland for recognition, representation, and rights.
This exhbition, composed of entries created by Zac Cash as part of his 2023 Undergraduate Research Project, aims to map this era of discontent and change, contributing to and complementing the wider movement of European Radicalism that the 'Barricades' website is centred around. In the summer of 2023 he visited archives and historical sites in Edinburgh, Glasgow, and London to uncover manuscripts and other artefacts pertaining to Scottish Radical politics. The blogs contained within this exhibition are the result of this research.
These posts explore a wide variety of aspects within the Scottish Radical movement in this period, including the diary of weaver and 1820 'Radical Rising' participant John MacKinnon, the visit of King George IV to Scotland in 1822, and the 'Martyrs' Monument' on Calton Hill.
